Rationale

Music at The John Wallis Church of England Academy gives pupils the chance to create, perform and respond to music with increasing confidence and understanding.

Pupils experience music as both a practical and expressive subject. They develop their skills as performers, explore how music is constructed and learn how composers use elements such as melody, rhythm, harmony, texture and structure to create different effects.

Through listening to music from a range of styles, periods and cultures, pupils broaden their musical understanding and begin to recognise the ways in which music reflects identity, place and society. They are encouraged to listen critically, make connections and explain their ideas using appropriate musical vocabulary.

Music also develops discipline, creativity and collaboration. Whether rehearsing, composing or performing, pupils learn the value of practice, refinement and working with others, while gaining confidence in expressing their own ideas through sound.

Aims

Through Music, pupils will:

• develop confidence and fluency as performers

• improve their control of voice, instruments and musical technique

• compose and develop original musical ideas

• understand how the elements of music work together

• read, interpret and respond to different forms of musical notation

• listen critically to music from a range of genres, traditions and periods

• use appropriate musical vocabulary to describe and analyse what they hear

• rehearse independently and collaboratively

• refine performances and compositions in response to feedback

• develop an understanding of different musical styles and conventions

• build creativity, resilience and confidence through practical music-making

• explore opportunities for further study, performance and careers within music and the wider creative industries.
