Rationale

At The John Wallis Church of England Academy, we believe that a high-quality Dance education enables pupils to develop creativity, confidence, discipline and physical expression.

Through GCSE Dance, pupils develop their ability to perform, choreograph and appreciate dance. They explore a range of styles, professional works and choreographic approaches, while developing their understanding of how movement can communicate ideas, emotions and meaning.

The course combines practical performance with creative and analytical study. Pupils learn to work independently and collaboratively, refine their technical and expressive skills, and make informed artistic choices. They are also encouraged to analyse and evaluate professional dance works, developing their ability to use subject-specific vocabulary and communicate thoughtful, evidence-based responses.

GCSE Dance provides pupils with opportunities to build resilience, teamwork, creativity and self-confidence, while developing skills that are valuable for further study, employment and participation in the wider creative industries.

Aims

GCSE Dance aims to ensure that pupils:

• develop technical, physical and expressive performance skills

• perform confidently as both soloists and members of a group

• develop creativity through the process of choreography

• use movement, structure, dynamics and space to communicate ideas and intentions

• explore and respond to a range of professional dance works

• develop an understanding of different dance styles, influences and choreographic approaches

• analyse, interpret and evaluate their own work and the work of others

• use appropriate dance terminology with accuracy and confidence

• develop teamwork, communication, discipline and resilience

• build confidence in performing and presenting creative work

• understand the importance of rehearsal, refinement and reflection in improving performance

• provide a strong foundation for further study and future opportunities within dance, performing arts and the wider creative industries.
